In 2011 I left the familiarity of the Queensland coast to relocate to the Northern Territory. I was in search of new challenges and career opportunities. One of the first and most impactful people I met during my four years in central Australia was Colin Furphy, or as we fondly called him 'Col'.
I was quickly impacted by Col's compassion, resilience and energy for life. His story of overcoming adversities, whilst staying positive and caring, was an inspiration to me.
News was released that the local public hospital's children's ward was in desperate need of new equipment, however lacked funding. Before long Col had come up with a plan to support and fund the hospital - Get together a group to climb Kilimanjaro, the world's highest single peak, located in Africa.
He recruited a team of four from around the world, including me.
The journey through creative fundraising pre-climb, the hike (naturally we chose the most challenging 'Whiskey route') and our further journey around Africa was once in a lifetime. I learnt so much about myself, as an individual, a team member, and an adventurer. We successfully raised the money and donated it to a very grateful Alice Springs hospital.
Sharing experiences with a motivational leader like Col changed my life, changed me as a person.
I'm now happier, more ambitious and braver than ever before.
